Russia shot down Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 in Ukraine, according to UN aviation authorities.

MH17 Crash Accountability Established by UN Aviation Council

Ottawa: A significant ruling came from the UN Aviation Council, which stated that Russia was responsible for the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014, resulting in the loss of 298 lives. The Dutch government announced this determination on Monday.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) indicated it would be discussing potential compensation in the coming weeks. On that fateful day, MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was shot down amidst conflict involving Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces.

Back in November 2022, a Dutch court found two Russian nationals and a Ukrainian man guilty of murder related to the incident. Moscow deemed the ruling “scandalous” and rejected the extradition of its citizens.

The ICAO, based in Montreal, has yet to comment on this latest decision. This ruling follows a lawsuit initiated by Australia and the Netherlands in 2022.

Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp emphasized the importance of this decision for the victims’ families, aiming to secure truth, justice, and accountability. He added that it sends a vital message: violations of international law cannot go unpunished.

Both the Netherlands and Australia are now hoping that the ICAO will call on Russia to engage in discussions about reparations. While the ICAO does not possess direct regulatory authority, it holds moral influence and establishes global aviation standards adopted by its 193 member states.
