Russia’s Alleged Targeting of Elon Musk
A former FBI agent has claimed that Russia’s top military intelligence agencies have focused on Elon Musk, exploiting vulnerabilities linked to his lifestyle and personal choices. This operation is said to have been supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Jonathan Buma, who worked as an anti-intelligence officer for 16 years, remarked, “If Putin had no awareness of these actions and approved them, they wouldn’t have happened.” He shared these insights with German broadcaster ZDF.
Buma asserted that the Russian intelligence agency, GRU, had been conducting operations to influence major figures in Silicon Valley, including Musk and venture capitalist Peter Thiel. Their tactics reportedly involved collecting compromising information that could instill fear.
He pointed out that Musk’s relationships and drug use, particularly his use of ketamine, presented opportunities for Russian agents to manipulate him. “There’s substantial evidence to back this claim,” he noted, although he simultaneously acknowledged a lack of concrete proof.
Additionally, Musk’s involvement in events like the Burning Man festival and interests in adult entertainment were deemed as potential vulnerabilities by Russian security services, according to Buma.
He further claimed that the outreach to Musk and Thiel wasn’t solely the work of the GRU; instead, Putin himself was allegedly involved. “The envoy tasked with approaching both had direct connections with Putin,” said Buma.
There are claims that Musk and Putin have had direct communication “probably several times.” A report from the Wall Street Journal corroborates previous claims of secret conversations between the two, indicating that their interactions date back to at least 2022.
The GRU is recognized for its covert operations and is a critical component of Russia’s intelligence system, managing foreign military endeavors and espionage while often employing unconventional strategies.
Buma, who made these allegations in the ZDF documentary, was arrested in March for disclosing classified information to a publishing company. He is currently out on bail set at $100,000.
Musk’s views on Ukraine have shifted significantly over time. Initially, in 2022, he generously provided Starlink satellite services to support the Ukrainian military. However, he later threatened to withdraw this support and grew more critical of Ukraine’s leadership by 2024, aligning himself with President Donald Trump, for whom he now serves as an advisor.
