Anthony Knox Jr., a state wrestling champion from New Jersey, along with his father, received sentences related to an altercation that occurred during last year’s regional tournament as they approached the stands.
Initially charged with simple assault following the February 22, 2025 incident at Collingswood High School, they negotiated a plea deal in Collingswood City Court on Wednesday, receiving reduced penalties, as reported by NJ.com.
Knox Jr., who has won four state titles at St. John Vianney, claims he confronted a fan who had allegedly mocked his father’s presence and disturbed the school’s athletes before the ensuing altercation, which led to minor injuries. However, witness accounts suggest differing views on the heckler’s behavior, according to NJ.com.
During the proceedings, Knox Jr.’s charge was downgraded to disorderly conduct, resulting in a one-year suspended sentence from Judge Brian Herman. He can have the charges dismissed if he satisfactorily completes his probation; otherwise, full charges will be reinstated.
Judge Herman also showed some compassion towards Knox Sr., a former MMA fighter, who faced potential prison time and a hefty fine. His charges were similarly reduced to disorderly conduct and breach of the peace, concluding in a $1,000 fine through a plea agreement.
The elder Knox was accused of physically assaulting a spectator at a convention in New Jersey’s 25th District.
While Knox Jr. remained silent in court, his father expressed regret about the incident, calling it “truly disappointing.”
Knox Sr. mentioned how some of the remarks directed at him infuriated him more than he had ever felt before, emphasizing the need for better emotional control. “I apologize,” he said, recognizing that the comments, regardless of their impact, didn’t justify his reactions.
The events captured last year demonstrated a chaotic scenario, as seen in available footage, with both individuals confronting rival school’s fans.
According to the arresting officer from the Collingswood Police Department, Knox Jr. allegedly struck a minor multiple times, resulting in pain and bruising.
His actions led to an initial expulsion from the NJSIAA state tournament, but he later successfully appealed to regain his eligibility.
Ultimately, he secured his fourth consecutive state title with an outstanding high school record of 144-1, culminating in a senior ranking as the nation’s top wrestler at 126 pounds.
After initially committing to Cornell, Knox Jr. reopened his recruitment last January. He joined Rutgers on January 7, signing a noteworthy NIL contract. Currently, he’s taking a gap year at the Spartan Combat Regional Training Center in Ithaca, preparing to join Rutgers as their highest-ranked recruit ever.
