Ryne Stanek off to rough start with Mets after trade

Looking to bolster their bullpen, the Mets acquired Ryne Stanek from the Mariners before the July 30 deadline.

So far, the results have been poor.

Stanek gave up four runs and only got one out against his former team on Sunday in Seattle.

It was his second poor showing in five games with the Mets.

After the game, Mariners manager Carlos Mendoza praised Stanek for “a really good at-bat,” saying his former teammate “knew him really well,” adding that Stanek had pitched well in his previous game in Colorado.

Still, the results haven’t been good for Stanek for a while.

Stanek had struggled even before the trade from Seattle.

He has allowed no runs in his final three games with the Mariners.

The 33-year-old was expected to help bolster a new bullpen that also includes the additions of Phil Maton and Huascar Brazovan.

Maton has been outstanding and Brazovan has also been in good form in his past two appearances.

The return of Reid Garrett should also help.

Overall, the bullpen has performed relatively well since the moves made following injuries to Brooks Raley and Drew Smith and the short-term absences of Dedniel Nunez and Sean Reid-Foley.

But with a playoff berth looming, the Mets will be hoping to see more from Stanek, a proven postseason performer who has pitched in October each of the past four seasons.

Starling Marte continues to rehab from a right knee contusion that has sidelined him since June and could make back-to-back appearances in the outfield for the first time on Tuesday and Wednesday for Double-A Binghamton.

He last played for the Mets on June 22nd.

The Mets are still waiting for the 2022 version of Marte, who had an .814 OPS, to emerge again.

Perhaps more than anyone, they are excited to see Pete Alonso leave Seattle.

The first baseman was hitless in 11 at-bats, struck out six and walked one in three games against the Mariners.

Combined with Brandon Nimmo’s long-running slump, it’s no wonder the Mets got swept by the Mariners.

Francisco Alvarez has hit just one home run since June 26th and just five in 60 games this season.

The 22-year-old Alvarez played in 123 games last year and hit 25 home runs.
