OpenAI Fundraising Round Nears Completion

OpenAI, the company founded by Sam Altman, is reportedly close to finalizing a fundraising round that may value it at over $1 trillion as it considers a public offering.

The firm behind ChatGPT is aiming to raise up to $30 billion, with a target valuation of around $1.25 trillion, as stated by sources familiar with the matter. It’s worth noting that this valuation doesn’t take into account the new capital being raised.

In this fundraising effort, notable participants include tech investment company Coatue and some unnamed investors from the UAE. The influx of capital is being viewed as a strategic move ahead of a potential IPO, initially anticipated for this year but now postponed.

While the total amount from this fundraising round has not been finalized, OpenAI is reportedly urging investors to finalize their commitments by the end of the week.

In August, OpenAI submitted confidential registration documents to the SEC for an initial public offering, though company executives have not been forthcoming about the exact timeline for this event. Altman expressed to Fortune last month that he believes it’s “not the right time” to go public, while OpenAI’s CFO, Sarah Frier, indicated that an IPO could take place sometime in 2027.

This ongoing deliberation about becoming publicly traded occurs during a critical period for major AI companies. Altman, along with Dario Amodei of Anthropic, has advocated for a slowdown in AI development while simultaneously seeking new investments.

Anthropic is reportedly eyeing mid-November for its own IPO, anticipating a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for the company associated with the Claude AI model.

On a related note, reports suggest that Wall Street investors are urging both Anthropic and OpenAI to expedite their public listings, worried that a possible Democratic victory in the upcoming midterms might lead to increased regulation of the AI sector.

In June, Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which also encompasses his AI initiative, xAI, achieved a historic IPO. This week, Musk hinted that SpaceX might merge with Tesla, which could result in a colossal entity valued at $3.5 trillion.

Efforts to obtain comments from OpenAI are ongoing.
