Sen. Sanders Critiques Cryptocurrency Bill Amid Controversy
Senate Majority Leader Plough is set to support a cryptocurrency bill, while Senator Bernie Sanders plans to hold discussions on Wednesday with industry experts about the proposed legislation. He warns that the bill may “enrich Trump and his billionaire supporters.”
The U.S. Stablecoins (Genius) Act aims to establish a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies known as Stablecoins. Sanders’ office expressed concerns on Tuesday, stating that the bill could “threaten the stability of our financial system” and potentially facilitate corrupt transactions that benefit Trump and his allies.
Another critic, Senator Elizabeth Warren, argues that the Genius Act encourages illegal activities and offers inadequate consumer protections. A consumer advocacy group recently highlighted that the legislation lacks provisions to safeguard consumers and could allow tech companies to operate in banking without the scrutiny that traditional banks face.
According to Sanders, the Trump administration has actively promoted the cryptocurrency sector in ways that directly advantage Trump and his wealthy supporters. He pointed out a private dinner planned for top holders of the $Trump Meme Coin, which suggests an entanglement with crypto token investments that could benefit Trump’s financial interests.
Additionally, a new coin from Trump’s venture is expected to be used in a significant business deal backed by the Abu Dhabi government, involving $2 billion.
Sanders characterized these developments as a clear form of corruption. Recent revelations surrounding Trump seem to have diminished the chances of the Genius Act passing, especially among Democrats, many of whom are calling for stronger anti-money laundering provisions and greater attention to national security.
In light of these concerns, it appears some Democrats are stepping back from their support for the bill in its current state. Reports suggest that the corruption linked to Trump has particularly influenced their stance.
“Against this backdrop, there’s hope Congress will take action against corruption. However, it seems they might rush to pass the Genius Act instead,” Sanders commented.
This Tuesday, Warren and fellow critic Senator Jeff Markley plan to introduce a new proposal, the Cryptocratic Act, which aims to prevent top government officials, including the president and members of Congress, from engaging in digital asset transactions.
Sanders’ upcoming discussion will feature Sacha Haworth from the Tech Surveillance Project and Corey Frayer from the American Consumer Federation, both focused on technology governance and consumer protection.
The conversation will be broadcasted live across various platforms.
