Sanders: Trump will be ‘closer to Netanyahu’ over Gaza if reelected

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Sunday that he believes former President Trump will resemble Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if re-elected.

“To those who say, 'I can't support Harris because she doesn't agree with me,' [with] Sanders said on CNN's “State of the Union” that Trump “…will be closer to Netanyahu” on the issue.

Sanders said he thinks he can move Vice President Harris “on that issue” of the Israel-Hamas war.

Harris has called for a ceasefire and pushed for an end to the war in Gaza, but she faces intense scrutiny from both those who want Hamas to be defeated and those who want an end to the war for Palestinians in Gaza.

“So if we elect Harris, I think we'll have an opportunity to mobilize her on this issue. Let me be clear: We cannot let the children of Gaza starve,” Sanders said. . “She would be open to that. I doubt Mr. Trump would do that.”

The Biden administration has been asking Netanyahu to negotiate a ceasefire agreement for nearly a year. U.S. officials said Israeli leaders agreed privately before later backtracking.

President Trump met with Prime Minister Netanyahu this summer at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida, the day after Netanyahu met with President Biden and President Harris at the White House.

President Trump this week praised the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and predicted his death would ease peace talks in Gaza, where war has been going on for more than a year.

“I think that would make it easier,” President Trump said. “I’m glad Bibi decided to do what she had to do.”
