Santa Rosa City Council Approves Downtown “Entertainment Zone”
The Santa Rosa City Council has recently approved a plan to transform the downtown area into an “entertainment zone.” This would allow residents and visitors to walk the sidewalks with open containers of alcohol.
According to reports, the new rules will enable people to eat and drink while strolling between two central spots: Old Courthouse Square and Railroad Square. This would be permitted during specific hours from Friday to Sunday.
Participating businesses will be allowed to sell beer and wine in designated reusable or recyclable cups. Patrons will receive wristbands, which will permit them to enjoy their drinks around the designated areas without the worry of receiving a citation for an open container.
“This could be a great thing for the city,” said Mayor Mark Stapp.
In recent times, downtown Santa Rosa has struggled to generate the kind of foot traffic typical of larger cities. Local business owners have shown vocal support for this initiative, viewing it as a creative way to stimulate economic activity.
Advocates for the entertainment zone, known for its early closing times, believe that easing restrictions could significantly benefit local restaurants, bars, and breweries.
“I think Santa Rosa is going to get darker and a little more boring over time,” City Councilwoman Natalie Rogers expressed to reporters.
However, some council members voiced concerns about potential unintended consequences and the challenges of enforcing the new rules, especially with police staffing reductions due to budget constraints. Nonetheless, they have backed the proposal.
City officials are actively working on details related to safety measures and enforcement. Further discussions on these topics are expected to take place next week.
