Super Bowl champion Saquon Barkley announced on Monday that he would not be joining President Trump’s sports, fitness, and nutrition council.
“A few months back, I got some information about the council, and honestly, I’m not too familiar with it,” Barkley shared during a press conference. “I felt overwhelmed with everything, and my family and I thought it was best not to take it on.”
“I was pretty surprised when I heard my name mentioned,” he continued. “I appreciate the opportunity because it’s a great initiative, but it did catch me off guard.”
The Philadelphia Eagles had previously played golf with Trump, including at his resort in Bedminster, New Jersey, and even took Air Force 1 back to the White House earlier this year.
Trump’s April appearance alongside Barkley drew some backlash, though the president praised him as an outstanding athlete.
“He’s a fantastic young man and an incredible football player. Saquon had a remarkable season running behind one of the strongest offensive lines in the NFL,” Trump remarked during their time together.
Barkley has surfaced as one of 30 members of the newly established White House Sports Council. This initiative aims to tackle issues related to obesity, chronic diseases, inactivity, and malnutrition among children in the U.S.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and former Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor, along with retired players like Nick Bosa and Tua Tagovailoa, are expected to be part of Trump’s council, which will be led by professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau.
“I’m proud to be a part of this team. I’m not entirely sure what our tasks will be, but I’m here to contribute,” Barkley stated.
While Taylor’s specific responsibilities weren’t detailed, other members, like Bosa, have clear roles, advising the president on college athletics and women’s sports.
