Savannah Guthrie Reflects on Faith Amid Mother’s Disappearance

During a digital Easter gathering hosted by Good Shepherd New York, Savannah Guthrie spoke candidly about her struggles with faith and uncertainty, coinciding with the 63-day disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie.

Nancy, 84, was last seen early on February 1 in her north Tucson, Arizona home. Authorities found a blood trail leading from her house to the driveway, and her back door was found wide open. Disturbingly, there was no doorbell camera to capture footage of what transpired.

As the investigation progressed, a masked figure was seen on security footage at the front door, but Nancy’s location remains unknown.

Guthrie shared her emotional message, admitting that the hopeful themes of Easter can feel distant while she copes with the turmoil of her mother’s absence. “At times, that promise feels irretrievably lost, and living through this seems harder than facing death,” she expressed, noting feelings of deep disappointment and abandonment.

Reflecting on her current challenges, Guthrie wondered whether Jesus experienced similar feelings of uncertainty and suffering. “In my trials, I found myself questioning if he knew this kind of pain caused by confusion and the unknown,” she said. “During my most difficult moments, I even doubted whether I was experiencing emotions he hadn’t faced.” Her perspective shifted as she contemplated the period between Christ’s death and resurrection, a time she believes is crucial to understanding faith. “What did Jesus know in those moments? Did he feel endless agony while in the tomb?” she mused.

In addressing the feelings of anxiety and confusion that often accompany life’s uncertainties, Guthrie emphasized that faith calls for trust, even when the answers aren’t clear. “Even in our darkest moments, we often feel lost or abandoned, yet faith invites us to hold on to hope for a future we can’t yet see,” she remarked.

Ultimately, Guthrie redefined her experiences, stating that life’s journey consists of navigating unanswered questions. “Though I grapple with these realities, my faith assures me that God is present, offering comfort without the guarantee of immediate answers,” she noted. “The contrast of light amid darkness makes this morning remarkably beautiful. It’s a light that feels desperately needed.”

As she celebrated Easter, she expressed a hopeful vision for the future, saying, “When I close my eyes, I feel the sunlight and I envision a time when heaven and earth will unite.” Conclusively, she stated with conviction, “I still believe. Happy Easter.”
