Anthony Scaramucci claimed Monday that prosecutors in former President Trump’s hush money criminal trial have “proved the case” and said the former president is likely to be convicted.
Prosecutors ended arguments on Monday by changing their questioning of President Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen. Prosecutors are expected to adjourn after Cohen completes his testimony, but Cohen’s admission on cross-examination that he stole from the Trump Organization has raised questions about the credibility of the star witness.
Scaramucci, Trump’s former communications director, said in a CNN interview with Jake Tapper that such concerns should not prevent a jury from convicting Trump.
“I think the facts of this case are pretty much clear,” he said. “Money was spent and the money was misallocated. And was there fraud committed before the election to cover this up?”
“The winning argument here is this: These are the facts of the case. Here are the receipts for the case. Based on the facts, do you think the defendant is guilty or not guilty? And Mr. Cohen Am I lying to you right now?” he continued.
“And I don’t think any of the 12 jurors will say he’s lying, because he’s saying things that are hurtful to him,” he added.
President Trump is accused of falsifying business documents in the weeks before the 2016 election in an effort to cover up past affairs. Prosecutors allege Cohen facilitated hush money payments to cover up the story.
“These guys were hiding something. They put Michael in jail for this. And now they’re putting Mr. Trump on trial for this. They were hiding something,” Scaramucci said. he said.
“Is that a criminal act? I think so,” he continued. “And the question is what the 12 jurors think of it. And I think they proved it.”
It is unclear whether Mr. Trump’s lawyers will mount a full defense in the case. If they choose not to do so, the case could go to a jury as soon as this week.
