Democrats’ Mixed Reactions to Trump’s DC Police Control
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough revealed on Wednesday that a number of Democrats might actually welcome President Donald Trump’s decision to federalize the DC police as a means to tackle rising crime rates.
“I’ve been getting calls from various people recently,” he noted. “There’s a sentiment that Washington should have intervened long ago. It’s become a dangerous place; it’s chaotic and often criticized on social media for being in disarray.”
He expressed concerns about Trump’s actions, suggesting that while some worry the President is overstepping, the crime situation in the city has been problematic for decades. “We can’t have a repeat of the National Guard situation from 2020,” Scarborough emphasized, indicating that not everyone sees the move as beneficial.
On Monday, Trump announced his plan to assume control of the DC metropolitan police and deploy the National Guard to the capital.
Scarborough shared insights from conversations he had, mentioning that even within his social circles, many Democrats feel unsafe. “I live between the city and its outskirts. Just the other day, Mika and I spoke with locals who said they hardly walk more than a few blocks at night in D.C.,” he recounted. “You don’t have to think twice about walking several blocks in New York.”
He contrasted the safety perception between the two cities, stating, “New York feels secure, while Washington, D.C. can be unpredictable. I enjoy biking around, but I don’t venture out after dark—it’s risky. The crime rate may be declining, but veterans of this city still don’t feel safe.”
Since August 7, law enforcement in Washington, D.C. has made over 100 arrests, including 43 on a single Tuesday, despite the claim that crime rates are at their lowest level in 30 years, according to some Democrats.
This mixed messaging only underscores the ongoing debate regarding safety and the effectiveness of current policing strategies in the nation’s capital.
