Cartel Tensions Rise After Drug Lord’s Death
Following the assassination of a notorious drug lord, a chilling cartel banner has appeared at a high school in Tijuana, which is located just north of the U.S. border.
These banners, expressing allegiance to Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes—known as “El Mencho”—were displayed on Tuesday, just days after special forces carried out a successful raid that resulted in his death early Sunday morning.
The message on the banner, translated to English, stated: “Like it or not, they are ready…at Mencho’s command.”
Although no direct threats were made to the school, officials opted to cancel classes for the day to ensure the safety of students and staff.
The principal quickly activated security measures by calling 911 and suspended all school activities as a precaution.
Additionally, the Attorney General of Baja California made an appearance at the school, though attempts to reach the AG’s office went unanswered.
Oseguera Cervantes was located and killed after intelligence revealed one of his associates had been tracked to a secluded resort.
According to Mexican Defense Secretary Ricardo Torrevira, investigators had linked a woman to Oseguera right before the raid.
It was later found that this woman had gone to a resort in Tapalpa, located in Jalisco state, where Oseguera and his operatives were hiding out.
While the agency moved in, Oseguera and his men resisted, leading to a shootout. In the ensuing chaos, four cartel members were killed, and Oseguera sustained serious injuries. He ultimately succumbed while en route to a hospital in Mexico City.
