Schiff criticizes Trump for using the National Guard and placing DC police under federal control

Schiff Criticism of Trump’s Actions Amid National Guard Deployment

Senator Adam Schiff from California has expressed strong opposition to President Donald Trump’s strategy regarding the deployment of the National Guard and its impact on public safety in Washington, D.C. His remarks came as a trial opened concerning the deployment of California State Guard forces to Los Angeles to address unrest related to immigration issues, seemingly circumventing Governor Gavin Newsom’s authority.

In a statement shared online, Schiff highlighted how Trump previously utilized National Guard and military forces to enforce his immigration policies. He labeled Trump’s tactics in D.C. as reminiscent of a “tinpot dictator,” urging vigilance and action against such maneuvers, suggesting that complacency could have dire consequences for any city’s safety.

Meanwhile, Trump announced plans to send approximately 800 National Guard members to Washington to combat crime. He stated that the D.C. metropolitan police department would be placed under the jurisdiction of Attorney General Pam Bondy. During a press conference, Trump assured reporters that this deployment aims to restore law and order in the capital.

The National Guard, generally a reserve force for state and federal operations, operates under state leadership, except in the District of Columbia where federal oversight applies. Trump’s recent comments about cleaning up Washington of “crime, savages, filth, scum” came after he had vowed to take a strong stance against violence and chaos.

Additionally, Trump’s plan to turn the D.C. police into a federal entity has raised concerns about potential authoritarianism, with Schiff echoing Newsom’s previous criticism. Newsom had previously filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding the National Guard’s use in response to civil disturbances, arguing it represented an alarming drift towards authoritarian governance.

The White House has yet to comment on these developments. Schiff’s remarks serve as a broader critique of Trump’s governance approach, which some view as increasingly troubling, particularly in light of ongoing legal battles over the authority and deployment of military assets within the states.

As this situation unfolds, it raises many questions about the balance of power, state versus federal authority, and the implications for civil liberties in America.
