Senator Schiff Critiques Trump’s Iran Nuclear Strike Decision

Senator Adam Schiff from California has voiced his concerns over President Donald Trump’s recent decision to target Iran’s nuclear facilities. Schiff insists that such actions should not proceed without approval from Congress, although he acknowledges that destroying these sites could temporarily hinder Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

“Is there anything good that can come from this? Yes, in a way. The destruction of these facilities could delay Iran’s program, and given that this regime is a major sponsor of terrorism, that’s a positive outcome,” he told CNN’s Kasie Hunt on “Confederation State.” He expressed doubts, though, about the legality of the military action, arguing that the administration lacks a proper mandate without congressional authorization.

Trump announced on Saturday that U.S. forces had successfully bombed several nuclear sites in Iran. This action occurred amid Iranian forces launching a strike against Israel, as the president sought a path to “peace.”

“There was a lot of uncertainty, and this wasn’t constitutional. It wasn’t legal. The administration should have consulted Congress before taking such significant action,” Schiff stated.

In a conversation with Hunt, Schiff was asked whether he believes the world is less secure now than it was previously. He responded cautiously, “Honestly, it’s hard to say. Anyone claiming to predict the future is likely overstepping. We have to consider the implications for American safety and whether this could change the dynamics within the Iranian regime. It truly is uncertain.”

He further suggested that the intelligence supporting these military actions should have been shared with Congress, stating that, according to a press conference that morning, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth seemed to lack clarity on the situation as well.

Following Trump’s military actions, response from multiple bipartisan voices like D-Calif. Ro Khanna and R-Ky. Thomas Massie has criticized the president. They both contended that such actions require congressional approval.

“Trump acted against Iran without Congress’s consent. We must return to Washington immediately to vote on our war powers resolution,” Massie said, emphasizing the need for accountability.
