Sen.-elect Adam Schiff announced early Friday that he will resign from the House of Representatives and take his seat in the Senate on Monday.

Rep. Schiff (D-Calif.) notified the House of Representatives on Friday that he would be leaving the House starting Sunday, confirming the move. washington examiner He plans to be sworn in on Monday. This happens less than a month after 119th Congress begins January 3, 2025.
The senator-elect thanked voters in a video after casting his final vote in the full House on Friday.
“I am so grateful for the opinions you have shared with me, the values you have shared with me, the legislative ideas, and the ways in which you have enabled me to be effective as your advocate. “We're doing it,” Schiff said.
Schiff added that he has met with many Republican and Democratic senators ahead of the Senate transition and is optimistic about “a real culture of finding common ground.”
Meanwhile, the outgoing congressman will end his 24-year term in the House with a reputation as President-elect Donald Trump's chief opponent.
When Republicans took control of the House, then-Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) stripped Schiff of his Intelligence Committee duties, claiming he had misused information for political purposes.
In June 2023, Republicans passed a resolution to censure the California Democratic Party, and Mr. McCarthy publicly rebuked Mr. Schiff for misleading the public during the Congressional investigation into the so-called Trump campaign's ties to Russia.
Mr. Schiff led the charge of the now-proven Russian collusion hoax during the 2016 campaign.
Earlier this year, President Trump called Schiff an “enemy from within,” sparking speculation that President Joe Biden would grant pre-emptive pardons to protect Schiff and others from Trump's legal retaliation.
The California congressman defeated Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) in the primary and defeated Republican Steve Garvey in the 2024 election. He replaced the late Senator Dianne Feinstein.
