Controversy Erupts Over School Board Member’s Comments
Officials at the Central Florida Board of Education are facing backlash, particularly from Sarah Rockwell, the chair of the Alachua County Board of Education. She recently laughed about the death of Hulk Hogan, describing her remarks as “cruel and lighthearted.”
In a Facebook post, Rockwell made comments referencing Hogan’s antagonism toward supporters of former President Donald Trump and unions, which apparently sparked outrage. One response captured the sentiment perfectly: “How can a Republican parent feel that their children are safe in the school system she oversees? She needs to go.”
Rockwell initially seemed unaware of Hogan’s passing, stating, “Oh, did Hulk die? I didn’t know.” Following additional comments regarding Hogan’s history with labor unions, she remarked that he was “never a good person” and expressed no loss about his death.
Though she later deleted the post, the damage was done, with many screenshots circulating online. In response to the growing criticism, Rockwell issued an apology, stating that her comments were not meant to cause harm and reaffirmed her commitment to being fair and impartial as a board member.
“I want to assure you that the best interests of our children and our public schools are at the heart of everything I do as a board member,” she wrote in her statement, trying to alleviate parents’ concerns.
However, doubt remains. School choice advocate Corey DeAngelis has called for her resignation, arguing that her apologies are unconvincing. He questioned how parents could trust the education system under her leadership, especially after she “celebrated” Hogan’s death.
The local Republican Party also joined the call for Rockwell to step down, stating, “Celebrating someone’s death, regardless of political party, is condemned.” They acknowledged that while her apologies may seem sincere, the hurt caused cannot be overlooked.
