Amy Riccardi Wins School Board Election in Loudoun County

Amy Riccardi, an independent candidate, triumphed over liberal incumbent Arben Istrefi in Loudoun County’s recent school board election, which was heavily influenced by the district’s controversial policies on gender identity.

Loudoun County previously opposed the Trump administration’s Title IX enforcement, which aimed to protect spaces designated for women. The district decided to continue allowing biological males in women’s facilities, leading to various scandals. With Riccardi’s victory, she will join fellow school board member Deanna Griffith, and together they bring focus on safeguarding female students.

Riccardi secured the win with 51.54% of the votes against Istrefi’s 47.62%, as reported by the Virginia Public Access Project.

On her campaign website, Riccardi expressed her aspiration to adjust the school board’s policies to align with state and federal regulations and to ensure accountability within the administration regarding student performance.

“LCPS has fallen short in holding the administration responsible for student grades and outcomes,” Riccardi noted in her policy priorities. “No current school board members have properly supervised a $2 billion budget, rubber-stamping decisions while student enrollment continues to drop. As taxes rise, student achievement suffers. It’s time for a change.”

In July, investigations by the Trump administration concluded that Loudoun and several other Virginia school districts were violating federal law by implementing policies that favored transgender students, compromising the rights of others. Despite these findings, Loudoun chose to maintain its stance and support policies allowing students to access facilities based on gender identity rather than biological sex.

Loudoun County has become infamous for its transgender policies; in 2021, the district faced significant backlash after allegations emerged regarding the mishandling of a sexual assault incident involving a transgender male student in a girls’ bathroom.

Recently, two male students were suspended for questioning a female student filming them in the boys’ locker room, although a federal judge later intervened to block the punishment.
