Schumer attributes the Brooklyn Bridge crash involving a Mexican Navy ship, which resulted in two deaths, to DOGE.

Schumer Comments on Brooklyn Bridge Accident Involving Mexican Navy Ship

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer raised concerns that inefficiencies in government may have contributed to the recent incident where a Mexican Navy ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in two fatalities and several injuries.

In a statement released Sunday, Schumer, after receiving details about the tragic accident, expressed worries about the possible impact of an employment freeze at the Department of Homeland Security on the U.S. Coast Guard’s operations. However, the Coast Guard countered that their systems were fully operational at the time of the incident.

Schumer noted, “There seems to be some dysfunction within the Coast Guard. After being thoroughly briefed on last night’s accident, it’s apparent that we have more questions than concrete answers about its cause and prevention.” He specifically mentioned the hiring freeze that could affect the Coast Guard Vessel Traffic System (VTS), which operates similarly to air traffic control.

The VTS, he suggested, might not function optimally, which raises concerns about safety, especially in busy areas like New York Harbor. “If this is true, then perhaps this accident is a warning sign that calls for immediate attention,” he added.

Despite Schumer’s claims, the Coast Guard maintained that their VTS was functioning according to established protocols during the crash. They clarified that no other vessels were involved in the incident and they took immediate action, such as deploying crews and coordinating with local authorities for safety measures.

In a separate development, the National Traffic Safety Commission announced a “Go Team” would be dispatched to the Brooklyn Bridge for further investigation.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated that the Mexican ship Cuauhtémoc, carrying 277 people, lost power before striking the bridge. He reported that out of the injured, 19 people were hurt, with two in serious condition.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her sorrow over the loss, stating, “Our thoughts are with the families of the two crew members who tragically lost their lives in this accident.”
