Schumer backs updated kids online safety bill

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York announced Thursday his support for a bill that would regulate how youth social media platforms operate.

Schumer, along with several LGTBQ+ advocacy groups, dropped their opposition to the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) after sponsors updated its text and the bill inched closer to passage.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) are the bill’s lead sponsors.

“For too long, children and teens have been exposed to harassment, bullying, and other harm online. The Kids Online Safety Act would require social media companies to We will be mandated to design products with safety in mind, provide tools for parents to protect their children, and give families more options to manage and disconnect from these platforms. I look forward to working with Senators Blumenthal and Blackburn in a bipartisan manner to advance the bill in the Senate,” Schumer said in a statement.

KOSA’s update comes after an intense hearing with the CEOs of Meta, TikTok, Discord, Snapchat, and X, formerly known as Twitter.
