Schumer, R-New York, suggested in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday that the only path to a two-state solution is to remove Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from office.

He went on to say that the prime minister had “lost his way” and that he was putting his own political survival above Israel’s best interests and had no interest in pursuing peace.

Democrats also called on the U.S. government to take action to ensure humanitarian aid is provided to Gaza.

“The United States has an obligation to do better,” Schumer said. “I believe the United States must provide strong humanitarian aid to Gaza and pressure Israel to get more aid to those in need. We empathize with the oppressed and the oppressed, because we know that too.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) responded to Schumer’s comments, calling them “highly inappropriate” and calling it “wrong for American leaders to play a divisive role in Israeli politics.” Stated.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ala.) also responded to Schumer’s comments about Netanyahu.

Speaking on the Senate floor after Schumer’s remarks, McConnell said Israel deserves allies who act like allies and that foreign observers should not call for the removal of other countries’ leaders.

McConnell also called Schumer’s comments “hypocritical” and expressed the opinion that Israelis should be the only population that has a say in how their government is run.

“The people of Israel deserve American support, whether in their homeland or in captivity.” “And Israel’s unity government and security cabinet deserve the respect due to a sovereign democracy.”

McConnell went on to criticize Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which have repeatedly rejected peace deals from the Israeli government.
