On Sunday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) expressed uncertainty about President Trump’s commitment to the Constitution in light of recent immigration enforcement actions.
During an interview with Kristen Welker on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Trump mentioned he was “relying” on Attorney General Pam Bondi to handle the administration’s approach to a Supreme Court ruling related to the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia in Maryland, which the administration had inaccurately summarized.
When Welker inquired if he felt obligated to uphold the Constitution regarding deportations, Trump replied, “I don’t know. I have great lawyers who work for me, and they will certainly adhere to what the Supreme Court stated. Interpretations can vary among what you said, what I said, and what the Supreme Court indicated.”
In response to a clip shared on the social platform X, Schumer remarked that the president had acknowledged he “doesn’t know” if he should support the Constitution.
“This is as American as it gets,” he added.
Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen (MD) previously noted that the U.S. was experiencing a constitutional crisis due to the actions of the Trump administration.
“Do you believe the Trump administration is disregarding the courts? Is our country currently facing a constitutional crisis?” Welker asked Van Hollen during his appearance on “Meet the Press.”
“Yes, absolutely, we are. [They are] disrespected numerous courts. The court’s directive to promote his return means more than merely doing something, yet they are not acting. Yes, they are indeed violating court orders right now,” Van Hollen stated, referring to Abrego Garcia.
