Schumer Faces Republican Backlash Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer from New York is facing criticism from Republican colleagues for his remarks to Democrats that, despite the government shutdown entering its ninth day, “every day will get better for us.”
Senator John Thune from South Dakota expressed frustration on the Senate floor, stating, “Democrats shouldn’t care if military families can’t pay tomorrow’s paycheck.” He argued that while Schumer may feel optimistic, many Americans believe the ongoing situation is serious. Thune warned that as the shutdown continues, more people will recognize that Democrats are largely accountable for it.
Thune referenced a recent Morning Consult poll indicating a growing perception of Democratic responsibility for the shutdown. The poll revealed that 43% of voters blame Republicans and 38% blame Democrats, marking a notable shift in public sentiment.
Thune’s comments were made in response to Schumer’s interview with Punchbowl, where the Democratic leader suggested that they had been preparing for the shutdown and focused on health care since September 30th.
Republican Senator John Barrasso from Wyoming described Schumer’s attitude as “tone-deaf,” questioning who the “we” was in his statement. Barrasso pointed out that it certainly isn’t the military personnel or various federal workers who have gone without pay.
Senator Mike Lee of Utah took to social media, highlighting Schumer’s remarks and sarcastically suggesting that Democrats seem to be enjoying the shutdown. “Are Americans feeling better by the day?” he questioned on X.
Vice President Vance also criticized Schumer, remarking that his comments presented a “vile sentiment” from a leader. Similarly, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt called Schumer’s statements “disgusting and revealing,” emphasizing the challenges faced by federal workers and military families during the shutdown.
