Schumer oddly suggests that DOGE might have contributed to the tragic Brooklyn Bridge accident involving a Mexican ship.

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) raised eyebrows on Sunday by implying that recent budget cuts to the U.S. Coast Guard might be connected to a tragic crash involving the Brooklyn Bridge.

“It’s clear that the Trump administration has been interfering with Coast Guard staffing,” he said. “We need to understand how this played into last night’s incident in terms of command, communication, and coordination at a local level.”

He hinted that there may be issues with the Vehicle Traffic System’s functionality, suggesting that employment freezes could have impacted operations, similar to what is seen with the FAA’s control measures.

Schumer noted, “If these cuts contributed, then the Brooklyn Bridge accident could serve as a chilling example of why we must act cautiously moving forward,” he stated.

However, it should be noted that there were no reports of other ships being involved in the accident on Saturday.

Reports indicate that the Mexican training vessel Cuauhtemoc lost maneuverability and collided with the bridge, resulting in the deaths of two naval cadets and injuries to at least 17 individuals.

The Coast Guard confirmed in a release on Sunday that they responded promptly to the scene of the collision.

The Coast Guard’s response included mobilizing crews from the New York State Coast Guard Station and establishing a safety zone extending between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, effectively halting commercial traffic in that area.

Since its inception earlier this year, President Trump’s Office of Government Efficiency, helmed by billionaire Elon Musk, has implemented significant budget cuts across various agencies, including the Coast Guard. These cuts included the discontinuation of logistics management systems crucial for configuration, maintenance, and supply chain management.

Officials reported that terminating the ineffective system saved the agency over $32 million. However, there has been no evidence directly linking these budget reductions to operational failures within the Coast Guard.

Schumer continues to push against the latest vote counts and is vocal about various issues, including a Trump-supported budget bill and concerns regarding President Joe Biden’s fitness for office.
