Schumer Questions Trump on Jet Gift from Qatar
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made an announcement on Tuesday regarding “retaining all DOJ political candidates.” He is seeking clarity from the Trump administration about a jumbo jet gift from Qatar’s royal family, which he describes as “a serious national security threat.”
“The revelation that Qatar will gift Donald Trump a $400 million private jet is not just outrageous; it’s also fundamentally unsafe,” Schumer stated. “This situation is beyond mere corruption—it’s a national security issue.”
He continued, “Given the troubling implications of a potential Air Force funded by Qatar and the reports that the Attorney General has signed off on this unethical deal, I am placing holds on all DOJ political candidates until I receive further information.”
A White House spokesperson responded by criticizing Schumer, suggesting that “Senator Schumer and his law-and-order party are trying to obstruct Trump and compromise American safety and civil rights.”
Criticism of Trump’s Acceptance of Qatar Jets
Trump has defended the acceptance of the jet, claiming that it would serve as a temporary Air Force option as Boeing has delayed the delivery of a new fleet. “We are extremely disappointed in how long it’s taking Boeing to produce a new Air Force jet,” Trump expressed Monday. “Our current Air Force is decades old, and it doesn’t stack up against newer models.”
Reports have indicated that the Trump administration plans to accept a $400 million Boeing 747-8 from Qatar, which Trump would use until the end of his term and then transfer to his presidential library.
Schumer Calls for Transparency
During his speech, Schumer requested that the Justice Department’s Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) unit disclose any actions taken by individuals working as Qatari foreign agents that could potentially benefit Trump or his organization. “The public deserves to know the details surrounding this private jet transaction,” he stated. “Trump claimed this was a ‘free jet.’ But does that imply Catalis offers a fully secured aircraft?”
He raised concerns about the security measures on such a jet, questioning, “How can we trust that these measures were implemented correctly? Why should we rely on foreign entities for something so sensitive?”
Schumer also emphasized that the Attorney General should testify before both the House and Senate to clarify the reasoning behind facilitating this private jet deal. “I’ll hold all political candidates at the Department of Justice until the Attorney General provides a thorough explanation for these decisions,” he concluded.
