Schumer to block Trump’s top judicial nominees

Minority leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) announced Wednesday that the Senate would prevent him from moving forward with President Donald Trump’s nomination.

Schumer argued that Trump intends to use the judicial system for political gain, despite Trump being a target for government weaponization over the past decade.

Schumer doesn’t have enough senators to block candidates through the vote, so instead evokes lesser-known tactics.

“Donald Trump makes it clear that he is not loyal to the law and intends to use the Department of Justice, the US lawyers’ office and law enforcement as weapons to chase his perceived enemies,” Schumer said. I said In a statement. “This blatant, despaired political motivation is deeply eroding the rule of law and I am deeply skeptical of Donald Trump’s intentions about these important positions.”

Schumer has decided to lead the charges and block Trump’s candidate, but Democrats have yet to succeed in their efforts. Thanks to the Republican majority, all Trump candidates have been confirmed, even those who received positive backlash and behind-the-scenes lobbying.

Senate leaders like Schumer usually rely on senators to approve confirmation of judicial candidates from the state and wait for confirmation until they receive a “blue slip” indicating the senator’s approval.

Schumer, who represents New York, refuses to return a “blue slip.” This launches the confirmation process for Jay Clayton, appointed as the US lawyer for the Southern District of New York, and Joseph Nocera Jr., appointed as the Chief Prosecutor for the Eastern District.

Republicans are now forced to weigh their options. In the past, Iowa Republican senators who chair the Senate Judiciary Committee have abandoned the “blue slip” practices of circuit court candidates during Trump’s first administration. Since then, the Senate has supported practices for other candidates, and Grassley has signal He respects the precedents of US lawyer candidates.
