NFL Hosts Discuss Possible 18-Game Expansion
As discussions heat up regarding the NFL potentially expanding its regular season to 18 games, “NFL Red Zone” host Scott Hanson has shared some intriguing ideas about introducing an additional bye week.
Hanson, who is 54 years old, mentioned that there’s talk of implementing a league-wide bye week if the expansion occurs. “If we add an 18th game, do we think about a second bye week? Or maybe there’s room for a complete league-wide bye week,” he remarked in a recent chat.
He suggested a scenario where all teams could have a weekend off around mid-October or early November. “This way, players can recuperate, catch their breath, and everyone can take a little break from football before gearing up for the latter part of the season,” he added.
However, he pointed out that for this 18-game structure to materialize, various stakeholders, including the league, the players’ association, and corporate partners, need to align their interests. “It’s crucial that all parties involved are in agreement. We’re talking about significant changes here, and a lot of discussions are necessary,” Hanson explained.
He also highlighted that adding an extra game and corresponding bye weeks would likely extend the season, possibly pushing the Super Bowl back by about two weeks. “That could mean the Super Bowl lands after Valentine’s Day, which is quite late,” he noted, acknowledging the various factors at play.
Interestingly, Super Bowl LVI, which featured the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals, took place on February 13, 2022 — the latest date on record for the event. Looking ahead, Super Bowl XI is set for February 14, 2027, coinciding with Valentine’s Day, potentially marking another delay.
Personally, Hanson expressed his enthusiasm for more games, as he feels it translates to more action and excitement. “More games mean more touchdowns, which is always thrilling in the NFL red zone. If this idea becomes a reality, I’ll definitely be smiling,” he concluded.
