Scott Jennings States Trump Administration Thinks the American Dream Shouldn’t Rely on Purchasing Inexpensive Goods from Adversaries

Trump’s Administration and the American Dream

On Wednesday, Republican strategist Scott Jennings discussed the notion that President Donald Trump’s administration hasn’t framed America’s dreams in terms of buying “the cheapest junk” from China. This comment arises amid criticism of Trump’s stance on tariffs, which he claims might result in fewer dolls at a higher price.

In this context, Jennings suggested that both Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent promote the idea that the American dream involves producing high-quality goods domestically at fair wages.

“They’re indicating that America’s dreams aren’t just about accessing cheap goods from China,” Jennings stated. He emphasized that the real American Dream focuses on local employment and creating a better future for families. “It’s not about getting inexpensive items from abroad,” he added. “The ideal is to manufacture here, ensuring quality and fair compensation.” Jennings pointed out that he owns a variety of imported items but believes the ultimate goal should be domestic production.

This message was echoed by Bescent during a speech at New York’s Economic Club on March 6. He articulated, “The essence of the American Dream isn’t about cheap products. It’s about the possibility for citizens to achieve prosperity and security.” According to Bescent, this perspective has been overlooked in recent trade agreements.

Presently, the U.S. imposes tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese imports. Meanwhile, China’s manufacturing sector has seen a downturn, with the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) dropping below 50 in April, indicating contraction. Recent reports highlight that new export orders from China have significantly decreased since December 2022, amid ongoing Covid-19 lockdowns.
