The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has denied President-elect Donald Trump's request to halt sentencing in a so-called “hush money” case in New York.

In a 5-4 decision Thursday, SCOTUS rejected President Trump's emergency request to delay the case.
Four of the court's five conservative justices, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh, voted to approve President Trump's request. However, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who was appointed by President Trump, voted against it along with other Democratic judges. He has previously sided with the Biden administration on border measures, including in January 2024.
In his short order, the judge cited two reasons for his decision.
“First, the alleged evidentiary violations in President-elect Trump's state court trial can be addressed through the normal appellate process. Second, the decision to issue an 'unconditional dismissal' after a short virtual hearing.” Given the trial court's intent, sentencing imposes a relatively light burden on the president-elect's liability.”
Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday, just 10 days before his inauguration on January 20.th For the second term.
