The children’s book focusing on puppies and LGBTQ themes was the point of the argument between a Maryland school district lawyer and U.S. Supreme Court Judge Neil Gorsuch on Tuesday.
The issue surrounds cases brought about by parents who want to freely opt out of having their children read such books in public schools. It has been reported on wednesday.
The recent exchange was on the book title “Pride Puppy!” Robin Stevenson. The book is about children attending a Pride Parade with their family, according to the publisher’s website, but the family dog gets lost during the event.
In the book review, Publisher weekly “This fascinating introduction to the Pride Parade for the youngest readers proves the warmth and power of a strange community.”
During a recent exchange recorded in audio, Gorsuch I asked Montgomery County Public Schools Attorney Alan Schoenfeld was about books that previously belonged to the pre-kindergarten curriculum.
Schoenfeld replied that the book is no longer a curriculum, and Gorsuch replied, “It’s what they are supposed to look for leather and things, and what they are supposed to look for.”
Schoenfeld said, “It’s not a bondage. It’s a leather woman.”
Gorsuch immediately asked, “Sex worker?” The lawyer said, “No. That’s not true. No.” Gorsuch asked if it was a drag queen.
Book photos show Colorful images of children and adults holding flags of gay pride with different kinds of dogs.
The book appears to have a “search and search word list” that includes terms like leather, platform shoes, suggestions, and drag queens.
The Breitbart News reported that “the Supreme Court on Tuesday leaned to support a group of religious parents suing the Maryland Board of Education for refusing to allow K-5 children to opt out of the LGBTQ curriculum.”
Katherine Hamilton of Breitbart News continued:
In 2022, the Montgomery County Board of Education published a new “Inclusivity” book for K-5 students, robbing parental notices and opt-outs of storybooks discussing topics such as “gender” transition, pride parade, and favourable pronouns. Some of the readings are included Pride’s puppy, Uncle Bobby’s weddingand Born Preparation: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope.
In 2023, federal courts upheld a lower court ruling with Maryland’s largest school district, and a mix of Christian, Muslim and Jewish parents appealed to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court agreed to file a lawsuit in January.
Social media users responded to audio clips from Gorsuch and Schoenfeld. write“This is where we are, America! Today is a sad, sad day.”
“Why don’t seniors and disabled people want to read “Drug Queens”? Why is it always a child? ! ? “Another user I commented.
