The NFL recently transformed what should have been a crowning achievement into a rather unanticipated infraction.
They made a noticeable engraving blunder on the Offensive Player of the Year trophy granted to Jackson Smith-Njigba, a prominent player for the Seattle Seahawks.
Smith-Njigba received this award for 2025 after showcasing an extraordinary season. He addressed the situation in a video shared on his Instagram Story on Monday evening.
In the clip, he revealed that the trophy mistakenly stated “2025 Defensive Player of the Year” and included other errors, such as a missing space in the phrase “The Year.”
Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesperson, attempted to soothe the situation by clarifying to The Athletic that it wasn’t a mislabeling of the award, but rather a simple misspelling, with “Offensive” misspelled as “Oefensive.”
Smith-Njigba, incredulous, remarked in the video, “Guys, it’s getting disrespectful.” Following the video’s spread online, rumors circulated among fans.
McCarthy later told The Athletic, “The league made a mistake. We sincerely apologize to Jackson for it and are working on creating a new trophy.” He added, “We know what a fantastic offensive player he is; we just had some trouble expressing that.”
This error added a peculiar twist to what has been a momentous season for Smith-Njigba.
The 24-year-old receiver excelled in the league, finishing the regular season leading in receiving yards with 119 catches, totaling 1,793 yards and 10 touchdowns. Interestingly, his receiving yard total ranks as the eighth highest in NFL history, making up 44.1% of Seattle’s total receiving yards and 36.6% of the team’s overall yardage.
Yet, despite his achievements, the trophy mistake somewhat overshadowed the celebrations. For a player coming off a first-team All-Pro season, this blunder feels more like an avoidable mistake to many within the league, rather than just a trivial error.
