Community Raises Funds for Slain Church Member
Chasing Church in Seattle has successfully raised $70,000 in support of the family of LeBron Givaun, a 28-year-old congregant tragically killed outside the church during a young adult ministry event last week. The church organized a prayer vigil to honor Givaun, and initiated a fundraising campaign to assist his family. This campaign aims to cover expenses related to the memorial, funeral, and ongoing living costs for his wife and children.
“The church community is pulling together to remember LeBron and help his family during this tough time,” the fundraiser stated. “Every contribution will help with funeral costs and assure his family that they are surrounded by love and support.”
As of Wednesday morning, the online fundraiser had exceeded its $50,000 goal, reaching $71,643.
Givaun was fatally shot last Thursday while attending a Young Adults Ministry meeting. Police believe the shooting was targeted. The suspect fled the scene in a white Hyundai Elantra, which was later discovered in flames in a nearby church parking lot.
Pastor Reid Russell Johnson of Chasing Church Seattle described Givaun as a “reborn” Christian who had recently joined the congregation. “His life was transforming,” Johnson remarked. “He had just gotten married and was eager to change his music to something that reflected his testimony.”
Givaun, known for his hip hop and rap music, had recently distanced himself from his earlier work, declaring, “I gave my life to Christ.” In a sincere apology, he stated, “I don’t want to promote negative music anymore; I just want to clarify my intentions to those who might be confused.”
Just three days before his death, Givaun released a new single titled “I’m On Fire,” which he promoted on his social media, encouraging others to join the church community.
The tragic shooting of Givaun is part of a larger pattern of violence affecting multiple cities in the United States, including locations in Illinois and Montana.
