Early Saturday morning, a convoy of three ships left Cyprus for Gaza carrying 400 tonnes of food and other supplies, the second such shipment in recent days, raising concerns about widespread hunger in the region. It was inside.
The relief supplies will be delivered by World Central Kitchen (WCK). The boat is loaded with ready-to-eat food, including rice, pasta, flour, legumes, canned vegetables and protein, to prepare more than 1 million meals. Associated Press reported.
The shipment also included dates, which are traditionally eaten to break the daily fast during Ramadan, which ends on April 8, the newswire said.
This convoy is the second shipment from WCK and the organization’s founder, celebrity chef José Andrés. The first ship loaded with aid arrived on the coast of Gaza on March 16, and the organization promised more ships to come.
The ship, belonging to the Spanish aid group Open Arms, took advantage of a maritime corridor set up by international donors to provide further aid to Gaza.
The United Nations has warned that famine could break out in northern Gaza as early as this month. Hunger is “imminent” as the entire population faces crisis levels of food insecurity, the World Food Program (WFP) said in a new report.
Earlier this month, President Biden announced that the United States would provide more air and sea aid, but humanitarian officials say it is not enough. The White House also announced that the United States would build a temporary port on the outskirts of Gaza to boost aid efforts.
The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7 after the extremist group launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing more than 1,200 Israelis and taking more than 240 hostages. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed since the fighting began.
