The Secret Service has begun an investigation following a social media post from James Comey.
Comey shared a photo featuring shells arranged to form “86 47,” captioned as “a cool shell formation on my beach walk.”
Fox News reports that while some might view it as harmless, “86” is often seen as a code for killing or getting rid of someone, and “47” is interpreted as referring to the 47th president of the United States.
Fox News highlighted:
The Secret Service is currently looking into a post from former FBI director James Comey, who shared an Instagram photo of seashells arranged to display the numbers “86 47.”
Comey eventually deleted the post after receiving backlash from government officials, lawmakers, and the son of former President Donald Trump, who has faced two assassination attempts—one resulting in the death of a bystander.
Comments associating the numbers with violence were sparked by the way they were formed on the beach. Comey captioned his post as, “A cool shell formation on my beach walk…” Even though some might dismiss it as innocent, “86” is commonly interpreted as a call to harm, while “47” suggests the 47th president.
Comey attempted to clarify his post’s intent.
“I’ve shared pictures of shells from my beach walks before, and I didn’t consider this a political statement. I didn’t connect those numbers to any violent implications,” he explained.
