A man wielding a knife was captured on doorbell camera footage as he repeatedly stabbed himself outside a Sacramento-area home, creating panic in the Arden neighborhood where he remains at large.
Rebecca Breen and her husband were relaxing and watching TV around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday when their Ring camera alerted them to someone at their front door. According to KCRA, Breen received notifications on her phone.
After some time, the couple heard a thud.
Breen recounted, “I heard a loud knock and looked through my Ring camera and realized something very strange was happening.”
The unsettling footage revealed the man making repeated stabbing motions at the entrance of their home. “It was scary. It was really scary,” Breen remarked.
She promptly called 911.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department dispatched officers and even a helicopter to help find the suspect, but he vanished before they could apprehend him.
Lt. Amar Gandhi of the sheriff’s office stated that officers arrived quickly as multiple residents reported sightings of an armed individual. “We received calls from residents, and when our deputies arrived at the scene, he had already fled,” Gandhi explained.
While no one was harmed during the incident—thanks to residents locking their doors and staying inside—Breen expressed concerns. She doesn’t believe her family was specifically targeted. “I’m sure we were, you know, randomly chosen. It’s very unsettling because if it wasn’t us, it could have been someone else,” she noted. “Clearly, he wasn’t in the right state of mind.”
Some neighbors criticized the absence of private security and expressed frustration over the delay in law enforcement contacting them after the frightening event.
Authorities continue to search for the suspect.
