Security Guard Injured in Synagogue Attack Identified
A security guard hurt during an armed attack targeting a toddler at a synagogue in Michigan has been named as an experienced police officer.
Danny Phillips was on duty at Temple Israel when a gunman charged in and opened fire. Reports indicate that Phillips was hospitalized as a result of the attack.
During a Shabbat service, Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny expressed support for Phillips, stating, “We send our love, prayers, and strength to Mr. Phillips. He is a wonderful person.”
Phillips began working at Temple Israel in mid-2025 after a long career at the Bloomfield Hills Police Department, where he served for 28 years and was the senior firearms instructor, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant.
His hiring was part of a broader initiative to enhance security measures in response to the threats facing the Jewish community. Temple Israel aimed to create a robust security plan that included an in-house team, metal detectors, and the deployment of drones during key events like High Holiday Services.
“We want everyone entering Temple Israel to feel safe and supported,” said a statement about his appointment. Staff and clergy had previously undergone active shooter training conducted by FBI agents.
This enhanced security likely helped protect the numerous children present during the attack, which unfolded when Ayman Mohammad Ghazali stormed in.
Phillips was the sole individual struck during the incident and lost consciousness. Ghazali fired a shot toward the building’s interior, prompting one of the armed security guards to return fire.
In a tragic turn, Ghazali later turned the gun on himself.
Senator Elissa Slotkin remarked on the security measures, stating, “If they hadn’t done a near-perfect job, we would be discussing a tragic outcome involving missing children.”
Ghazali, who worked in a restaurant and resided in Dearborn Heights, allegedly launched the attack after losing at least four family members, including a brother, to an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon just days before. Reports suggest he called his ex-wife shortly prior to the assault, asking her to take care of their children.
