Residents in the Tarzana neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley had previously complained about a trailer that suspect Julian Harper Smith had kept on their street, but changed their minds Tuesday after the suspect used the trailer to catch a burglary suspect.
“He’s a madman!”
Harper-Smith shared security camera footage of the incident with KCAL-TV and explained what happened.
He said he was inspired to act after seeing the men climbing over his neighbour’s fence from a strange spot – they were wearing hooded clothing and had their whole bodies covered.
“I went in there and grabbed my pepper ball gun and a bright flashlight and I went outside and turned my flashlight on and it must have scared them because it was really bright and they all ran back to their cars,” Harper Smith told KCAL.
“That’s when they jumped in the car. I put my flashlight down and fired a few shots from the back of the car, hoping they wouldn’t come back,” he added.
KCAL has video of the incident. News report on YouTube.
Neighbor Brett Cohen acknowledged he didn’t like Harper-Smith’s trailer before Tuesday, but the incident has changed his mind.
“Well, it’s a real eyesore!” Cohen said. “But it’s a good eyesore! Yesterday it was a terrible eyesore, but today I kind of like it!”
He thanked Harper-Smith for his actions.
“He’s a madman! Are you kidding me? That’s the coolest thing in the world! He’s John McClane, he chased them down without even knowing if they had a gun and he shot them!” Cohen said, referring to the fictional hero from the “Die Hard” film series.
