Controversial Moments at 9/11 Memorial Service

During the memorial service for September 11 at Ground Zero, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) were observed sharing laughs, as the names of the victims were read aloud. This sight was captured by a live broadcast, contrasting sharply with the somber emotions of those gathered to remember their loved ones.

Some prominent Republican figures expressed their disapproval on social media. Meghan McCain, the daughter of the late Senator John McCain, questioned the appropriateness of their behavior, tweeting, “Why are these two laughing?!?”

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) also commented, “How can you laugh while the names of the 9/11 victims are being read? Why would anyone do that?”

New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov (R) criticized Mamdani’s presence, pointing out that many families of victims had pleaded for him to stay away from the ceremony, yet he was seen laughing while they mourned.

Ocasio-Cortez faced backlash for her post on the 25th anniversary of the attacks, with conservative voices urging her to remain silent, and others sarcastically remarking on the situation.

Mamdani’s commemorative video message was also met with criticism, with some calling him out for his seemingly light-hearted demeanor during such a serious occasion. Influencer Vince Langman accused him of leaving behind a negative legacy.

More than 110,000 people signed a petition asking Mamdani to avoid the memorial, with one woman, Jeannette Puccio-Pick, expressing her anger over his connections to individuals who downplay the tragedy of 9/11. She recounted how her father was a victim of the attacks and declared, “We don’t want you there.”
