Details Emerge After Incident at White House Correspondents’ Dinner
President Trump reported that a Secret Service agent, who was equipped with a bulletproof vest during an incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, is in “very good condition.” However, being shot while wearing such gear can still lead to significant issues.
Those who have experienced it liken the impact to being hit by a heavyweight boxer.
At a press conference after the event, President Trump noted, “One police officer was shot, but he survived because he was obviously wearing a very good bulletproof vest.” The officer is currently receiving care at a nearby hospital.
“The officer was shot at close range with a high-powered weapon, but thankfully, the vest protected him. He’s in great shape and high spirits,” Trump continued.
Reports indicate that the police officer was later released from the hospital.
Authorities swiftly evacuated the president, first lady, and other officials after a suspect, identified as Cole Thomas Allen from Torrance, California, allegedly attempted to breach a security checkpoint armed with two firearms and several knives.
Allen was reportedly carrying a shotgun and a handgun.
Yet, many details about the shootout at the event’s security checkpoint remain unclear. Witnesses indicated multiple shots were fired, but it’s uncertain if they all came from the suspect or if some were fired by Secret Service agents, as shown in surveillance footage shared by the president on social media.
A photo released by the president depicted the suspect restrained, without a shirt, lying face down on the hotel lobby floor, and no gunshot wounds were reported on him.
It’s unclear what type of round the agent may have fired at Allen.
What is evident is that the impact from the firearm was felt by the Secret Service agents involved.
According to experts from Premiere Body Armor, getting shot while in a bulletproof vest is indeed painful. The vests prevent bullets from penetrating, yet do not absorb the energy from the impact. Many describe the sensation as akin to being hit with a heavy object. The level of pain can vary based on factors like bullet caliber, vest type, and the specific location on the body where the shot lands.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that initial findings suggest the assailant might have been targeting members of the Trump administration.
A motive has yet to be established, but reports indicate that Allen’s online presence was examined.
According to various sources, there is no evidence that Allen is affiliated with any specific political party. Records show he made a small donation to Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in October 2024. He describes himself online as a mechanical engineer and game developer, having studied at the prestigious California Institute of Technology.
Authorities mentioned that Allen had acquired two firearms in recent years, and—at this time—there appears to be no prior knowledge of him by local law enforcement.
