Details Emerge on Shooting Incident Involving ICE Agents in Maine
Senator Angus King’s office reported that the individual shot and killed by ICE agents in Maine on Monday was not the target of a federal arrest warrant, which contrasts earlier statements made by the senator. King had initially discussed the matter with Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin.
In a conversation with Fox News, King revealed that Mullin later informed him that “the victim is not subject to the warrant.” At first, the senator was told the person was indeed the subject of a warrant, but Mullin subsequently corrected that information.
“When I first spoke with him, he indicated the person was tied to a warrant. Then he called back to clarify that he had learned otherwise,” explained King. On Monday afternoon, he stated that Mullin had claimed the individual killed in Biddeford, located about 25 miles southwest of Portland, was a focus of immigration enforcement and had a deportation order.
King then recounted details from Mullin, including that during the incident, the man in his twenties was shot after being pulled from his vehicle, which was described as being “weaponized.”
The senator emphasized the need for a “full, transparent, public investigation” into the shooting, noting that the FBI would lead the inquiry due to its federal nature. King pointed out that, as far as he knew, there were no cameras on the officers involved, meaning there wouldn’t be any video evidence to review.
Mullin assured King that the investigation would be conducted impartially. “Anytime a life is lost, it’s tragic. We’re still finding out the details, but I did convey to the Secretary that he promised to conduct a thorough investigation,” King said. His approach, he added, is to remain skeptical but trusting of the information received.
Continuing on, King remarked that investigators must establish whether the actions of the deceased warranted the use of deadly force. “Did the officer feel threatened? Was the situation such that it justified the decision to use lethal force?” These are key questions, and King intends to ensure the investigation remains transparent and that local officials are involved.
As the incident unfolded, protests erupted near Senator Susan Collins’s office, where demonstrators chanted demands for accountability and displayed anti-ICE sentiments. King acknowledged that the community is right to press for answers, insisting that any available evidence should be disclosed without delay.
Collins has publicly called for a thorough investigation, while Maine’s Governor Janet Mills has indicated that the state police are collaborating with both local and federal authorities on the incident. The Biddeford Police Department also responded to a call regarding the situation involving ICE agents.
The Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition and Presente!Maine have identified the man killed as a 26-year-old Colombian who had come to Maine to establish a life and work. In a joint statement, the organizations expressed their condolences, emphasizing the tragic loss of someone who was a part of the community. They stressed the need for answers and a full accounting of what transpired during the incident.
Fox News Digital is seeking further information from ICE, the Department of Homeland Security, Senator King’s office, and the FBI regarding the ongoing investigation.
