Sen. Jim Banks Stops Bob Mueller Resolution, 'Obvious Political Attack' Against Trump

Sen. Banks Blocks Resolution Honoring Robert Mueller

On Tuesday, Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) halted a resolution intended to honor Robert Mueller, claiming that Democrats were prioritizing the revival of the Russia collusion narrative over critical issues like government funding.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) attempted to pass the resolution by unanimous consent. However, Banks objected, arguing that Democrats should instead focus on bolstering election integrity by funding the Department of Homeland Security, which has seen a halt for 59 days, ensuring TSA employees receive their pay, and moving forward with the SAVE America Act.

“This resolution adds fuel to a fire that was long ago extinguished,” Banks remarked on the Senate floor. “This is just another political stunt for President Trump, and I’m not on board with that today.”

Mueller, the former FBI director, passed away in March at the age of 81. He gained significant recognition for his role as special counsel in the investigation surrounding alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, which featured candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

Banks criticized Democrats for “reviving another resolution that serves as a clear political jab at President Trump,” resisting Durbin’s quest to advance the resolution without a complete Senate vote.

“Today, Democrats seem more inclined to dwell on their past failed attempts to undermine the 2016 election than to enhance our nation,” he asserted. “Robert Mueller’s reputation is mixed, and the outcome of his investigation… well, what I mentioned is a farce.”

Banks continued, “One truth stands out: Democrats simply can’t accept Trump’s legitimate win in 2016. Even a decade later, they’re still fixated on it and pushing the discredited Russia collusion theory. They understood, and still understand, that it’s a tactic to undermine President Trump.”

He went on to claim that the Mueller investigation aimed to obstruct Trump and derail his policies, which the American electorate had endorsed in 2016, resulting in substantial costs to the nation.

In anticipation of Republican opposition, Durbin highlighted Mueller’s history as a longtime Republican and referenced praise from former President George W. Bush, though he didn’t address Bush’s well-known disapproval of Trump’s policies.

“While my peers and I have discussed the Mueller report’s merits for years, his efforts on Russian interference during the 2016 election—alongside his tenure at the Department of Justice and the FBI—showcase true character, diligence, courage, integrity, professionalism, and commitment to the Constitution,” Durbin stated.

Banks remained skeptical. Durbin expressed disappointment over Banks’ unexpected decision to block the tribute to a man who dedicated his life to upholding national security and spent decades in public service.

“My colleagues’ stance appears to stem from one reason only: President Trump’s disapproval of Robert Mueller, which is ironic given that it was Trump’s own administration that appointed him as special counsel,” Durbin observed, noting that Mueller’s actions resulted in numerous legal repercussions for many individuals.

Durbin accused Trump of celebrating Mueller’s death. Following Mueller’s passing, Trump posted on Truth Social, “I’m glad he’s dead. He can’t hurt innocent people anymore!”

Mueller was designated as special counsel by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, a Trump appointee, after Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned following advice from Justice Department lawyers, stemming from his involvement in Trump’s 2016 campaign.
