Fauci’s Lawyer Dismissed During Congressional Hearing
During a recent session of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, tensions flared when one of Anthony Fauci’s lawyers became disruptive after Chairman Rand Paul (R-Ky.) indicated there would be consequences for Fauci’s choice to avoid answering questions.
In his opening remarks, Fauci made it clear he would invoke the Fifth Amendment and immediately declined to respond to Paul’s inquiries.
After some back-and-forth, Paul stated:
The Chair has denied your privilege claim. You’ve been directed to respond but continue to refuse, claiming privilege despite the existing pardon. The Committee should consider appropriate action due to your failure to testify as instructed.
Paul emphasized the seriousness of obstructing a Congressional inquiry, saying there would be repercussions for today’s noncompliance. This led to some complaints from Fauci’s legal team.
“You are not recognized. If you become unruly, you will be removed. You are not recognized, sir. Please remain respectful during this process,” Paul instructed, maintaining control over the proceedings.
He also pointed out, “You weren’t invited to sit at the table. Your presence has been disruptive. This isn’t a place to behave like that. Would you act like this in court? No, you’d face consequences.”
Exasperated, Paul warned, “I can’t tolerate this behavior. You’ve been told to remain quiet. One more word, and you’re out.”
Paul reprimanded the lawyers for supposedly interfering with the testimony, stating:
When he speaks again, he will be removed. This testimony is solely about Anthony Fauci. It’s not a competition with his lawyers. Sure, they can advise him, but they’re not permitted to dominate the testimony process. I’ve instructed them to stay in their designated area and not disrupt.
“This is how Anthony Fauci will be remembered: a lawyer not adhering to the rules. Is that really how you want to be recognized?” Paul said, requesting security to remove the lawyer as the audience reacted with applause.
