Sen. Rick Scott: It’s Necessary to Eliminate the Filibuster

Sen. Rick Scott Advocates for Ending the Filibuster

On Tuesday, Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) expressed the necessity of eliminating the filibuster to facilitate legislative progress during an appearance on Breitbart News Daily.

Scott highlighted the frustration prevalent among Republicans as Congress struggles to advance significant legislation, including a budget bill, despite having majorities in both the House and Senate, along with control of the White House.

Reflecting on his time as Florida’s governor from January 2011 to January 2019, Scott shared insights from his executive experience, emphasizing his efforts to address state financial issues.

He remarked, “Florida hasn’t balanced its budget, which has only occurred once in 40 years. States generally don’t balance their budgets; they resort to borrowing to manage them. It’s startling for them; they’re in the red and needing to increase expenditure and taxes. That’s not something I’m going to do.”

Scott defended his approach, stating, “That’s why we manage to balance our budget each year,” noting that it led to paying off a significant portion of the state’s debt and ushered in a “complete transformation” of Florida’s economy.

Now in his seventh year in Congress, Scott described his current role as “frustrating” compared to resolving funding issues at the state level. While candidates for the House and Senate may promote fiscal responsibility, he acknowledged that “it’s easier said than done.”

“In just seven years, the nation’s debt has surged by $21 trillion, and we face a $2 trillion annual deficit. Campaigning on fiscal issues is one thing, but actually voting on them proves challenging,” he commented.

Scott recounted a recent conversation where someone asked if he wanted to pay for certain expenses. He replied, acknowledging his background as a businessman and his aversion to personal debt—except for his home. “Sure, I may have business debts, but we’re working to get back to a stable financial situation,” he concluded, adding that “to achieve this, we need to eliminate the filibuster.”
