Senate Mourns the Loss of Lindsey Graham

In the Senate chamber, desks are draped with black veils, and above them sits a bowl of white roses—symbolizing the absence of Senator Lindsey Graham, who once occupied that space.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune spoke candidly during a heartfelt memorial for Graham, his long-time confidant and friend. With tears in his eyes, Thune reflected on Graham’s three-decade tenure in Washington and how deeply he influenced both his state and the nation.

“It’s hard to believe that Lindsey Graham is no longer with us,” Thune said. “You won’t see him in today’s session or share a laugh at this afternoon’s vote. The Senate feels empty without him, and I know many share this sentiment.”

Graham’s Passing Triggers Democratic Senate Seat Contest

As Thune recounted memories of Graham, the late senator’s staff were also present, tears evident throughout the room. Graham frequently visited Thune’s office, which is just a short walk from the Senate floor. He was known for rallying Republican lawmakers, sometimes even storming in to voice opposition to deals he didn’t support.

Thune remarked, “Lindsey was fearless in the causes he championed. No critique deterred him, as long as he believed he was standing up for what was right.”

“Senator. Warrior. Patriot. Politician.” Thune listed these descriptors but emphasized that, above all, Graham was a friend.

Following Thune’s tribute, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster officially nominated Graham’s sister, Darling Graham Nordone, to fill her brother’s vacant Senate seat for the remaining term. This move came with the backing of Thune, Trump, and other key figures.

At the nomination ceremony, Nordone expressed her strong feelings, stating, “I think this is what Lindsey would have wanted. I miss him immensely, but I am committed to honoring him through this role.”

Thune further characterized Graham as a staunch conservative who was also unafraid to collaborate with those across the aisle for the greater good. He concluded, expressing how much he will miss both Graham’s friendship and his sense of humor.

Thune found some comfort in knowing, “In the end, he just changed his address. Someday, Mr. President, let’s laugh together again.”
