The Senate passed the budget resolution for Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham after an overnight voting session early Friday.
The bill passed Senate 52-48 with a vote close to the party. Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul was the only GOP Senator to join all 47 Democrats in voting against the bill, citing financial concerns about the budget overview.
“If you follow the news, I'll look at the Elon Musk and Doge reports and get rid of billions, if not billions of dollars in waste, fraud and abuse,” Paul said. I said On a floor speech on Thursday. “Even so, we're meeting here today because Congress, the Senate, wants to increase federal spending.”
Graham's $340 billion budget overview is the first of two Senate approaches to deploying settlements. The proposal includes funds for defense and border enforcement as the Senate aims to address tax policy in another bill.
Graham admitted that the 1-building approach was ideal, but argued that his 2-building approach was a more immediate remedy for dealing with the border crisis.
“This budget resolution is a complete game changer in terms of securing borders and making the troops even more deadly,” Graham said in a statement Friday. “It would allow President Trump to fulfill the promise he made to Americans — a huge deal.”
While the Senate was taking the lead in moving forward with the settlement process, President Donald Trump supported Louisiana Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson's “Big Beautiful Bill” earlier this week. Trump has made progress in implementing his MAGA agenda, he noted. preferable The bill, which dealt with all his policy priorities in one, plummeted.
“The House and Senate do their epic job of working together as a unified, invincible team, unlike the Lindsay Graham version of the extremely important laws currently being discussed, not just some of them! ” Trump said.
Even with Trump's support, House lawmakers will not return to Washington, D.C., to vote for the settlement bill until next week.
Graham admitted that the 1-building approach was ideal, but argued that his 2-building approach was a more immediate remedy for dealing with the border crisis.
“I hope that the house can pass one big bill that meets President Trump's priorities,” Graham said. “But this approach provides the money needed yesterday to secure borders, enforce immigration laws, and continue the momentum to rebuild the military. Time is the essence.”
