Senate candidate El-Sayed supports Hasan Piker and criticizes Joe Rogan

El-Sayed Campaigned with Controversial Streamer, Critiques Rogan

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Michigan, has doubled down on his decision to partner with the contentious Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, while also taking aim at podcaster Joe Rogan.

When questioned about Piker’s polarizing remarks, El-Sayed sidestepped a direct denial, instead focusing his criticism on Rogan. “Look, I’m not here to dismiss anyone’s views. My goal is to discuss getting money out of politics, returning funds to people, and advocating for Medicare for all,” he stated. “This whole issue of platform control and cancel culture is exhausting. I thought we had moved past this debate about whether I should have joined Rogan. Despite what Logan may think, I’m still going to appear on his show.”

The Democratic primaries are currently fraught with tension in crucial states, with candidates aligning themselves with extreme figures.

It’s not clear if El-Sayed was specifically invited onto Rogan’s podcast. The Michigan Democratic Party has previously expressed regret over what some perceived as missed opportunities, particularly after then-Vice President Kamala Harris did not appear with Rogan, a decision some believe contributed to her later loss in the election. Observers noted that President Trump benefitted from appearing on unconventional platforms like “The Joe Rogan Experience,” helping him connect with broader audiences.

Rogan himself has become a source of controversy, particularly for his views on public health, including his stance on COVID-19 vaccinations. Critics have scrutinized him for advocating treatments like ivermectin, often branded as a horse dewormer.

“The Joe Rogan Experience” currently ranks as Spotify’s most popular podcast, followed closely by “Good Hang with Amy Poehler” and “This Past Weekend with Theo Von.”

El-Sayed’s Strategy with Controversial Figures

El-Sayed echoed arguments many have made about Piker, suggesting that the Twitch streamer could be a valuable asset in reaching a younger, more diverse audience. He has events planned at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University as part of his outreach.

Piker, known for his controversial stance on various issues, has faced backlash over comments some consider anti-American or anti-Semitic. Though he identifies as a Muslim and has defended his intentions, saying he uses his platform to combat discrimination, critics continue to challenge his rhetoric.

Notably, Piker once stated that “America deserved 9/11,” later deeming that remark inappropriate. More recently, he faced backlash for minimizing discussions around a recent gang rape incident attributed to Hamas, remarking, “It doesn’t change the dynamics,” which many found troubling.

El-Sayed’s association with Piker has sparked division within the Democratic Party. Some candidates have openly embraced him, while others caution that doing so might backfire, providing Republicans with ammunition against them. Following the announcement of El-Sayed’s collaboration with Piker, criticism surfaced, including from Elissa Schmier, regional director for ADL Michigan, who labeled the decision as normalizing extreme anti-Zionism.

Communications outlets have reached out to both El-Sayed’s office and Rogan’s team for further comments.
