Senate Candidate James Talarico Incorrectly Says FCC Did Not Air His Stephen Colbert Interview

Accusations and Clarifications on FCC Interview Controversy

Representative James Talarico, a Democrat from Texas, who is vying for a Senate seat, made claims on Tuesday suggesting that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) blocked him from appearing on CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” He took to social media, alleging that the FCC’s decision stemmed from fears that Democrats might disrupt the political landscape in Texas.

However, Stephen Colbert clarified on Monday that it was, in fact, the CBS station’s internal decision not to air the interview, made in order to adhere to the FCC’s Equal Time Rule. This rule mandates that when political candidates are given airtime, their opponents must also be offered a similar opportunity.

Talarico expressed his frustration on X, stating, “This is the interview Donald Trump didn’t want you to see. His FCC refused to air my interview with Stephen Colbert. Trump is worried we’re about to turn Texas upside down.”

During his show, Colbert stated that he would not proceed with airing the segment after receiving guidance from the station’s attorney, who advised that doing so could lead to complications with FCC regulations.

Colbert mentioned, “[Talarico] I was supposed to be here. However, our network’s attorney called us directly and told us in no uncertain terms that we could not have him on the air.”

While there exists an exception for news and talk show interviews under the Equal Time Rule, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr expressed concerns in a letter dated January 21, indicating he might revoke this exemption, citing possible partisan influences.

Colbert added a humorous jab, referencing the FCC chair as a “smug bowling pin” and reiterated that the FCC should focus on its responsibilities instead of politicizing decisions.

Additionally, the FCC launched an investigation into ABC’s “The View” on February 7, analyzing potential violations of the Equal Time Rule after Talarico’s guest appearance. This inquiry followed Disney’s failure to submit adequate documentation related to that appearance.

Talarico is currently competing against Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the state primary.

Neither Talarico’s office, CBS News, nor the FCC responded promptly to inquiries regarding this situation.
