Senate confirms final Cabinet nominee despite Republican holdouts

President Donald Trump's choice to lead the Labor Department, Lori Chavez Deremar, confirmed Monday night with bipartisan support in the Senate, completing the president's cabinet.

Chavez Deremar was confirmed with a 67-32 vote, with 17 Democrats joining 50 Republicans. Three Senate Republicans opposed the confirmation of Chavez Deremar. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ted Budd of North Carolina, and Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

“Chief Chavez Deremar will have an important opportunity to put the benefits of the working family ahead of the large labor bosses by empowering all American workers to join the union on their own terms. I hope she will take it.”

“We are deeply honored to be confirmed as the 30th Secretary of Labor under President Donald Trump,” Chavez Deremer I said in a statement on Monday. “As promised, I will work tirelessly to put American workers first by fighting for good paying jobs, safe working conditions and safe retirement benefits. Let's get to work.”

Despite his nomination for Trump, Chavez Deremar has received several pushbacks from Republicans.

Paul was the only Republican “no” vote during the committee's vote, citing concerns about his previous support for the Professional Act. This Union's position opposes the workplace rights laws defended by Paul and other Republicans.

In particular, Chavez Deremar reversed her position with professional law when Paul pushed her at a confirmation hearing.

“This is the question of whether this is a kind of reverse reversal of death, or whether she is really for this,” Paul told reporters after the hearing.

McConnell It reflected Paul's concerns In a statement Monday, Chavez Deremar claimed he had a policy record of “force hardworking Americans into union members.”

“The American people demand and deserve change after four years of economic heartache under the “most parent-union administration in American history,” McConnell said in a statement. “Unfortunately, Lori Chavez Deremar's record promotes policies that drive hard-working Americans into union members.

“Most Americans believe that joining unions should be a personal choice rather than an obligation. That's why more than half of the states, including Kentucky, adopt workplace rights laws. Secretary Chavez Deremar has an important opportunity to lead the interests of large-scale workers to the large-scale labor bosses by empowering all American workers to join unions on terms.
