Senate Democrat: Israeli assault on Hamas in Qatar reduces chances of getting hostages back

Senate Democrat: Israeli attack on Hamas in Qatar 'diminishes' prospects of returning hostages

Reactions to Israeli Strikes Against Hamas

On Tuesday, Senator Jack Reed expressed concerns that Israel’s military actions against Hamas could hinder the possibility of retrieving local hostages and achieving long-term peace.

“This certainly diminishes the chances of bringing back hostages, particularly those who are still alive,” he remarked. Reed noted that Hamas has indicated that the U.S. influenced the hostages’ relocation to Qatar in light of an impending Israeli strike.

He added, “This complicates the role of anyone trying to facilitate peace.” Meanwhile, a series of explosions targeted senior Hamas leaders in Doha.

Israel had previously stated that its military strategies were designed to “reduce civilian casualties,” emphasizing accurate ammunition and supplementary intelligence.

However, both current and former U.S. officials are expressing concerns about the ongoing violence. Former CIA Director John Brennan remarked that this situation represents a “dangerous and unstable escalation of tensions” in the region, as reported by MSNBC.

He further described the strikes as potentially detrimental to any short-term negotiations for a ceasefire with Hamas during a discussion with host Andrea Mitchell.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the Israeli assaults in Qatar. “We’ve just learned about these attacks, which undermine the progress towards a ceasefire and the safe return of all hostages. I denounce this serious violation of Qatar’s sovereignty,” he said at a press briefing, referencing reports from Reuters.

Guterres urged all involved parties to pursue a lasting ceasefire instead of further escalating the situation.

This attack follows the deaths of six individuals in Jerusalem attributed to Hamas.

Former President Trump has been vocal in urging Hamas to negotiate an end to the conflict that has resulted in significant loss of life. “Everyone is seeking a resolution. Everyone wants to halt this war! The Israelis have accepted my terms; now it’s time for Hamas to do the same,” he stated on his social media platform.

Trump warned Hamas of potential repercussions if they do not comply, declaring, “This is my final warning!”
