Schumer argued that the most effective strategy for Democrats opposed to Trump's policies from within the government is to avoid government shutdowns and continue pushing Trump back through Congress and courts.
“We have plans to face all of that,” Schumer said. “If a shutdown occurs, meet both the Senate and the debate about whether or not to cut this, and don't cut what you want to cut. We can't argue that we are creating conflicts on the best foundations we have and paying wages for tax cuts for middle class tax cuts.”
“And one more thing with the shutdown. With the shutdown, the court could be closed or at least completely and completely invalidated,” Schumer continued. “And the courts are one of the best ways we had to chase these people.”

Schumer said on Thursday when he announced his decision to help the government help it open, “The bill is very bad, but the possibility of a closure will affect America much worse.”
Schumer also tackled criticism from fellow Democrats of his opposition to MSNBC's government shutdown, saying the alternative was “terrifying.”
“That's even worse because the alternative is government shutdown,” he said.
